Deuxième album de Basile Rahola, en formule quartet (piano, sax, contrebasse, batterie). Un album qui respire la maturité, la sérénité mais aussi la complicité voire l’osmose.
Une réflexion sur la place de l’homme dans la complexité du monde actuel.
Basile Rahola, Pierre Hurty et Wajdi Riahi se sont trouvés. En jouant ensemble, souvent, et en gravant en 2021 un premier album fougueux (« Moments ») avec Julien Cuvelier au sax. Le leader contrebassiste avait aussi invité pour l’occasion Claudio De Rosa et Octavio Hernández sur quelques titres.
Le noyau dur de ce trio, on l’entendra un peu partout, tant l’amitié et la télépathie musicale sont fortes. Ils jouent les uns chez les autres, mais surtout les uns pour les autres.
Cette fois-ci, pour ce nouvel album, c’est le sax tenor Matthias Van den Brande qui a été adopté par Basile afin de former un quartette à très forte identité.
« From One Path to Another », reflète autant la maturité que la sérénité. Ces qualités sont sans doute dues aux récents chamboulements sentimentaux du contrebassiste français. Le prétexte était alors tout trouvé pour « faire un album ». Car Basile Rahola ne parle que s’il a des choses à dire.
Bien entendu, l’ensemble respire la liberté (dans les brillants solos de Wajdi), la complicité (le jeu modulé, subtil et enveloppant de Matthias) et l’osmose ( le drumming précis, claquant et doux à la fois de Pierre). Quant à Basile, tel un sage philosophe, il guide son groupe avec souplesse et intelligence.
Le titre ‘One For the Forgotten’ vient clôturer l’album et nous laisse face à une réflexion sur notre place dans la complexité du monde actuel.
Het tweede album van Basile Rahola, in kwartetvorm (piano, sax, contrabas, drums). Een album dat volwassenheid en sereniteit uitstraalt, maar ook medeplichtigheid en zelfs osmose. Een reflectie over de plaats van de mens in de complexe wereld van vandaag.
Basile Rahola, Pierre Hurty en Wajdi Riahi hebben elkaar gevonden. Ze spelen vaak samen en in 2021 namen ze een pittig debuutalbum (’Moments’) op met Julien Cuvelier op saxofoon. De toonaangevende contrabassist nodigde ook Claudio De Rosa en Octavio Hernández uit om mee te spelen op een paar nummers.
De kern van dit trio zal zowat overal te horen zijn, zo groot is hun vriendschap en muzikale telepathie. Ze spelen bij elkaar thuis, maar bovenal spelen ze voor elkaar.
Deze keer, voor dit nieuwe album, is het tenorsaxofonist Matthias Van den Brande die door Basile is geadopteerd om een kwartet te vormen met een zeer sterke identiteit.
“From One Path to Another’ weerspiegelt zowel volwassenheid als sereniteit. Deze kwaliteiten zijn ongetwijfeld te danken aan de recente omwenteling in het privéleven van de Franse bassist. Het was het perfecte excuus om “een album te maken”. Basile Rahola spreekt tenslotte alleen als hij iets te zeggen heeft.
Natuurlijk ademt het geheel vrijheid (in Wajdi’s briljante solo’s), medeplichtigheid (Matthias’ gemoduleerde, subtiele en omhullende spel) en osmose (Pierre’s precieze, slaande en zachte drumwerk). Wat Basile betreft, als een wijze filosoof leidt hij zijn band met flexibiliteit en intelligentie.
One For the Forgotten’ sluit het album af en laat ons nadenken over onze plaats in de complexe wereld van vandaag.

Basile Rahola, Pierre Hurty and Wajdi Riahi have found each other. They often play together, and in 2021 they recorded a spirited debut album (‘Moments’) with Julien Cuvelier on sax. The leading double bassist also invited Claudio De Rosa and Octavio Hernández to play on a few tracks.

One For the Forgotten’ brings the album to a close, leaving us to reflect on our place in today’s complex world.
