Ce dont une personne a besoin en 2024, selon le chanteur-pianiste An Pierlé ? « Moins de regrets. Moins de faux. Moins de peur. Et le courage de vivre le moment présent ».
Elle chante tout cela avec la sagesse d’une femme qui n’a plus besoin d’être une fille. Quatre ans après "Wiga Waga", l’An Pierlé Quartet est de retour avec Ultimate Survival, son deuxième album déjà paru sur le prestigieux label W.E.R.F. records.
Par rapport au premier album du groupe, les grooves sont plus profonds et les paroles plus directes. Cela s’explique en partie par le tournant qu’a pris la vie de Pierlé. La maladie avec un grand C a été repoussée et la prise de conscience qu’il vaut mieux profiter des jours pendant qu’ils sont là a été d’autant plus urgente depuis.
Le titre ne fait pas référence à cette période, mais lui a été offert par l’artiste Patrick Van Caeckenbergh, qui a conçu la pochette de l’album. Pierlé : « Il s’est inspiré d’un vieux livre sur les animaux qui s’occupent d’autres espèces animales. Nous avons tous besoin de cela de nos jours ».
Ultimate Survival est un album expérimental qui vous emmène dans les méandres d’un récit. Le premier single, "The Sting", donne immédiatement le ton. La chanson parle de l’acceptation des choses stupides que les gens font, même s’ils savent mieux que les autres. L’album célèbre la libération de pouvoir repartir à zéro, alternant la chaleur rauque et les élans virtuoses d’une voix aguerrie. Ce n’est pas du jazz classique, mais c’est le travail d’un véritable groupe de jazz. Avec le claviériste Hendrik Lasure et le batteur Casper Van De Velde (ensemble : Schntzl), APQ compte dans ses rangs le noyau de la « nouvelle vague du jazz belge ».
Le parrain de cette vague de jazz est le producteur et souffleur d’instruments à vent Koen Gisen. « Casper et Hendrik sont des artistes de classe internationale », déclare Gisen. « Ce qui est génial, c’est qu’ils ne jouent presque jamais deux fois la même chose, même en studio. En live, ce sera un merveilleux déraillement. En sachant que, grâce à ces deux-là, ils retomberont toujours sur leurs pieds ».
Pierlé : « Nos garçons ont aussi de vieilles âmes. Et c’est justement pour cela qu’ils sont nos mentors, et non l’inverse. Nous pouvons ainsi opter pour l’aventure. Et de vivre dans l’instant présent. »
‘Weet je wat een mens nodig heeft in 2024 ? Minder spijt. Minder fake. Minder angst. En de durf om nú te leven.’ An Pierlé bezingt het allemaal met de wijsheid van een vrouw die geen meisje meer hoeft te zijn. Vier jaar na Wiga Waga is het An Pierlé Quartet (APQ) terug met een tweede album op het prestigieuze W.E.R.F.-label : Ultimate Survival.
In vergelijking met het debuut van het APQ zijn de grooves nog dieper, de teksten nog confronterender. Dat heeft deels met de bocht te maken die het leven van de zangeres-pianiste nam. De ziekte met de grote K werd bezworen, het besef dat je maar beter van de dag kunt genieten is sindsdien des te urgenter. Maar Pierlé laat niet toe dat zoiets donkers het nieuwe album zou domineren : de titel verwijst niet naar die periode ; hij werd haar cadeau gedaan door kunstenaar Patrick Van Caeckenbergh, die de hoes ontwierp. Pierlé : ‘Mij deed het eerst denken aan een game als Mortal Kombat, maar hij haalde zijn inspiratie uit een oud boek over dieren die voor andere diersoorten zorgen. ’Daar hebben we vandaag allemaal behoefte aan.’
Eerste single The Sting zet de toon, een song over de aanvaarding van de stommiteiten die een mens zoal begaat, tegen beter weten in. Daybreak viert de bevrijding van te kunnen herbeginnen met een schone lei, Make Believe krabt de filters van sociale media. Nu eens gebracht met de hese warmte, dan weer met de virtuoze uithalen van een stem die weigert in het verleden te blijven hangen – en de zweverigheid mijdt als de pest. Ultimate Survival is een ervaringsplaat die je meeneemt op de golven van een vertelling. ‘Red het vege lijf’ vat daarbij zowel de teksten als de concerten van het An Pierlé Quartet samen. Want dit album mag dan al geen klassieke jazz zijn, het is wél het werk van een bonafide jazzband – de link met David Bowies laatste album Blackstar is nooit ver weg. Met toetsenist Hendrik Lasure en drummer Casper Van de Velde (samen bekend als schntzl) heeft het APQ zowat de kern van The New Wave of Belgian Jazz in zijn rangen.
De peetvader van die jazzgolf is producer-rietblazer Koen Gisen. ‘Casper en Hendrik zijn internationale klasse’, zegt Gisen. ‘Het prachtige is : ze spelen nooit twee keer hetzelfde, ook niet in de studio. Dat maakt van Ultimate Survival een pure momentopname. Live wordt dit een wonderlijke ontsporing, in de wetenschap dat het dankzij die twee altijd op zijn poten terecht komt.’ Pierlé : ‘Onze jongens zijn ook oud van ziel. En precies daardoor zijn zij onze mentoren, in plaats van omgekeerd. Om te kiezen voor het avontuur. En te leven in het nú.’

She sings about it all with the wisdom of a woman who no longer has to be a girl. Four years after Wiga Waga, the An Pierlé Quartet (APQ) is back with Ultimate Survival, its second album already on the prestigious W.E.R.F. records.
Compared to the APQ debut, the grooves are deeper and the lyrics more confronting. That has in part to do with the turn that Pierlé’s life took. The illness with a capital C was warded off and the realisation that you can best enjoy your days while you have them has been all the more urgent since. Pierlé doesn’t let something so dark dominate the new album though : the title doesn’t refer to that period, but was given to her as a gift by artist Patrick Van Caeckenbergh, who designed the cover. Pierlé : “He drew his inspiration from an old book about animals that take care of other animal species. We all need some of that these days.”
Ultimate Survival is an experiential album that takes you along on the undulations of a tale. First single The Sting immediately sets the tone. The song is about accepting the stupid things people do, even though they know better. The album celebrates the liberation of being able to start again with a clean slate, alternating husky warmth with the virtuoso outbursts of a seasoned voice. This is not classical jazz, but it is the work of a bona fide jazz band. With keyboard player Hendrik Lasure and drummer Casper Van De Velde (together : Schntzl), APQ pretty much has the core of ‘The New Wave of Belgian Jazz’ in its ranks.
The godfather of that jazz wave is producer/reed-blower Koen Gisen. "Casper and Hendrik are international class acts ", says Gisen. "The great thing is : they almost never play the same thing twice, not even in the studio. Live, this will be a wonderful derailment. In the knowledge that, thanks to these two, they will always land on their feet." Pierlé : "Our boys also have old souls. And that is exactly why they’re our mentors, instead of the other way around. So we can opt for adventure. And to live in the now."
