Si le trio Aka Moon a trouvé sa lune pleine au cœur de la forêt centrafricaine avec les Pygmées Aka, John Coltrane a toujours été leur astre solaire ; un souffle d’inspiration où l’audace et le renouveau côtoient la tradition, pour que la musique reste célébration et que le concert se métamorphose en rituel : un espace pour découvrir ce que l’on ne connaît pas encore.
Aujourd’hui, la géométrie triangulaire du groupe ouvre la voie aux deux planètes géantes que sont Robin Eubanks et Wajdi Riahi ; l’un, nourri par la force de son histoire immense, très proche du rayonnement coltranien (avec Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Ravi Coltrane...) ; l’autre, porté par sa terre d’Afrique et sa soif insatiable de découvrir toujours plus loin l’essence même de cet art.
L’histoire d’Aka Moon s’est déployée au fil de plus de trente années intenses comme une arborescence aux infinies ramifications ; la transmission n’a jamais cessé d’être la sève prolifique des idées, lieu de synchronisation des mémoires et d’invocation de gestes créateurs aux sources multiples.
Coltrane nous rappelle entre autres que l’art est un acte d’honnêteté absolue où l’on accepte de perdre, par amour, ce que l’on a acquis par la raison.
Au-delà du conventionnel « tribute to... », cette réunion se dessine comme une constellation qui n’a ni ici ni ailleurs ; une expérience de vie et de vitalité qui bénéficiera sans aucun doute du « Mirror Drumming » virtuel entre Stéphane Galland et Elvin Jones.
Terwijl het trio Aka Moon zijn volle maan vond in het hart van het Centraal-Afrikaanse woud bij de Aka-pygmeeën, is John Coltrane altijd hun zon geweest ; een inspiratiebron waar durf en vernieuwing hand in hand gaan met traditie, zodat de muziek een feest blijft en het concert verandert in een ritueel : een ruimte om te ontdekken wat we nog niet kennen.
Vandaag maakt de driehoekige opstelling van de groep plaats voor de twee reuzen die Robin Eubanks en Wajdi Riahi zijn ; de ene, gevoed door de kracht van zijn immense geschiedenis, zeer dicht bij de uitstraling van Coltrane (met Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Ravi Coltrane...) ; de ander, gedragen door zijn Afrikaanse afkomst en zijn onverzadigbare dorst om steeds verder de essentie van deze kunst te ontdekken.
Het verhaal van Aka Moon heeft zich in de loop van meer dan dertig intense jaren ontvouwd als een boomstructuur met oneindige vertakkingen ; de overdracht is altijd de vruchtbare sapstroom van ideeën gebleven, een plek waar herinneringen op elkaar worden afgestemd en creatieve gebaren met vele bronnen worden opgeroepen.
Coltrane herinnert ons er onder andere aan dat kunst een daad van absolute eerlijkheid is, waarbij men uit liefde bereid is te verliezen wat men door de rede heeft verworven.
Verdergaand dan het conventionele ‘tribute to...’, tekent deze bijeenkomst zich af als een constellatie die noch hier, noch elders bestaat ; een ervaring van leven en vitaliteit die ongetwijfeld zal profiteren van het virtuele ‘Mirror Drumming’ tussen Stéphane Galland en Elvin Jones.

Today, the group’s triangular dynamic paves the way for the two giants that are Robin Eubanks and Wajdi Riahi ; one, fuelled by the power of his immense history, closely aligned with the Coltrane legacy (with Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Ravi Coltrane...) ; the other, driven by his African roots and an insatiable thirst to explore ever further the very essence of this art.
Aka Moon’s story has unfolded over more than thirty intense years like a tree with infinite branches ; transmission has never ceased to be the prolific lifeblood of ideas, a place where memories synchronise and creative gestures from multiple sources are invoked.
Coltrane reminds us, among other things, that art is an act of absolute honesty in which one accepts, out of love, to lose what one has acquired through reason.
