Imaginons un monde où la beauté règne en maître, où l’harmonie transparaît dans des paysages sonores tour à tour apaisants, émouvants, troublants… Partenaire privilégié du chanteur David Linx avec lequel il forme un duo reconnu internationalement, le pianiste Diederik Wissels sait y faire avec la voix en termes de dialogue et d’interaction.
Un groupe n’étant pas l’autre, le trio, particulièrement original, qu’il forme avec la chanteuse parolière Ana Rocha et le saxophoniste Nicolas Kummert forme un triangle équilatéral parfaitement en équilibre, tant sur la base que sur la pointe…
Ne cherchons même pas dans quel univers le trio Wissels-Rocha-Kummert évolue : jazz, classique, musique du monde, il y a un peu de tout ça dans cet art dominé par une grande musicalité, soulignée par des modulations électroniques et accentuée d’échappées improvisées. Limpide, douce, la voix d’Ana Rocha peut aussi s’exprimer avec une puissance chatoyante. C’est que la beauté n’est pas toujours diaphane, elle peut aussi – et doit, comme ici - interpeller !
Rencontre avec Diederik Wissels dans Le Jazz d’Hortense
« RUBY » est le projet qui, actuellement, incarne le mieux la personnalité du guitariste Lorenzo Di Maio, toujours en quête de nouvelles échappées belles, pour autant qu’elles soient lyriques. Dans ce quartette sans basse, le natif de Saint-Ghislain met le synthétiseur en avant. De type Moog ou Prophet, cette vénérable machine assure dès lors la ligne de basse tout en ajoutant sa forte présence et sa palette sonore, installant des climats sur lesquels la guitare, mais aussi le piano, peuvent se déployer. Piano qui peut aussi être un Fender Rhodes électrique. C’est dire si, avec « RUBY », il y a de l’électricité dans l’air !
Avec son sens affirmé de la mélodie et de l’écriture, Lorenzo Di Maio, lui, travaille les sons comme un sculpteur l’argile, les modelant de façon séduisante ou interpellante.
Par son côté « fusion » élargie, « RUBY » allie la puissance du rock et la liberté du jazz, ce qui rend cette musique particulièrement puissante en public. Raison de plus de ne pas louper « RUBY » quand il passe dans le coin.
Beeld u even een wereld in waar de schoonheid heer en meester is, waar de harmonie doorschemert in soundscapes die afwisselend rustgevend, aangrijpend, verontrustend … zijn. Pianist Diederik Wissels is de geprivilegieerde partner van David Linx, met wie hij een internationaal erkend duo vormt, en weet aan de zijde van de zanger zijn mannetje te staan in de dialogen en de interactie.
Maar de ene groep is natuurlijk de andere niet. Het bijzonder originele trio, waarin hij de krachten bundelt met singer-songwriter Ana Rocha en saxofonist Nicolas Kummert, vormt een gelijkzijdige driehoek die zowel aan de basis als aan de top perfect in balans is.
De vraag in welk universum het trio Wissels-Rocha-Kummert zich begeeft doet niet ter zake : jazz, klassiek, wereldmuziek … Het zit allemaal in hun kunst die het moet hebben van een grote muzikaliteit die wordt onderstreept door elektronische modulaties en benadrukt wordt met geïmproviseerde uitbraken. De heldere, zachte stem van Ana Rocha laat zich soms ook gelden met een fonkelende kracht. Schoonheid is dan ook niet altijd transparant, ze kan – en moet, zoals hier – ook beroeren !
“RUBY“ is het project dat op dit moment het best aansluit bij de persoonlijkheid van gitarist Lorenzo Di Maio die onophoudelijk op zoek is naar nieuwe, mooie muzikale uitstappen, zolang ze maar lyrisch zijn. In dit kwartet zonder bas plaatst de muzikant uit het Henegouwse Saint-Ghislain de synthesizer op de voorgrond. Het eerbiedwaardige instrument, een Moog of Prophet, neemt de baslijn over en voegt er zijn sterke persoonlijkheid en sonore palet aan toe. Zo ontstaan er landschappen waarin zowel de gitaar als de piano zich ten volle kan ontplooien. Die piano kan overigens ook een elektrische Fender Rhodes zijn. Met “RUBY“ hangt er dan ook elektriciteit in de lucht !
Met zijn bekende gevoel voor melodie en compositie bewerkt Lorenzo Di Maio de klanken zoals als een boetseerder aan de slag gaat met zijn klei en geeft hij ze op een verleidelijke of opvallende manier vorm.
“RUBY“ moet het ook hebben van flink wat “fusion”, en laat zo de kracht van de rock samenvallen met de vrijheid van de jazz, wat deze muziek live bijzonder krachtig maakt. Reden te meer om “RUBY“ niet te missen.

Always on the lookout for new getaways, as long as they are lyrical, with this bass-less quartet the Saint-Ghislain native places the synthesizer center stage. Moog or Prophet, the venerable machine takes care of the bass line while adding a strong presence and sound palette, setting up climates on which the guitar, as well as the piano, can take off. A piano that can also be a Fender Rhodes. Yes, with “RUBY“, electricity’s in the air !
