Manicomio (en italien) se traduit par maison de fous.
A la fin des années 70, l’Italie est confrontée au démantèlement progressif des hôpitaux psychiatriques, Raymond Depardon photographie plusieurs asiles de la péninsule, et plus particulièrement les derniers instants de celui de San Clemente. C’est dans cet hôpital, sur une petite île dans la lagune de Venise, qu’il réalisera des photographies qui permettent de comprendre mieux que dix thèses savantes l’horreur ordinaire des lieux. Depardon nous met ici sous les yeux l’immense détresse des "soignés" et le profond désarroi de leur entourage.
Le sujet habite profondément l’équipe du TJ1 et son directeur artistique Patrick Masset. La création de Manicomio en résulte : un spectacle sur la question des enfermements d’aujourd’hui où nos institutions semblent à nouveau donner la priorité au contrôle plutôt qu’au bien être.
Créé à partir de rencontres dans des lieux marqués par la contrainte. Et notamment Vivalia Hôpital psychiatrique de Bertrix, l’Ephad Val de Meuse de Givet (France), le Centre Fédasil de Poelkapelle (Flandre Occidentale), l’Athanor à Dave… Avec son équipe de circassien.ne.s, Manicomio explore des corps et des trajectoires confrontés à des règles, des normes et des espaces imposés.

Manicomio (in het Italiaans) betekent gekkenhuis.
Aan het einde van de jaren 70 wordt Italië geconfronteerd met de geleidelijke ontmanteling van psychiatrische ziekenhuizen. Raymond Depardon fotografeert verschillende gestichten op het schiereiland, en meer in het bijzonder de laatste momenten van dat van San Clemente. In dit ziekenhuis, op een klein eiland in de lagune van Venetië, maakt hij foto’s die de alledaagse gruwel van deze plek beter weergeven dan tien wetenschappelijke proefschriften. Depardon toont ons hier de enorme wanhoop van de “patiënten” en de diepe ontreddering van hun omgeving.
Het onderwerp houdt het team van TJ1 en zijn artistiek directeur Patrick Masset sterk bezig. Het resultaat is Manicomio : een voorstelling over de kwestie van opsluiting vandaag de dag, waarbij onze instellingen opnieuw voorrang lijken te geven aan controle in plaats van welzijn.
Gemaakt op basis van ontmoetingen op plaatsen die gekenmerkt worden door dwang. Met name Vivalia, het psychiatrisch ziekenhuis van Bertrix, het Ephad Val de Meuse in Givet (Frankrijk), het Fedasil-centrum in Poelkapelle (West-Vlaanderen), Athanor in Dave... Samen met zijn team van circusartiesten verkent Manicomio lichamen en trajecten die worden geconfronteerd met opgelegde regels, normen en ruimtes.

Manicomio (in Italian) translates as madhouse.
At the end of the 1970s, Italy was facing the gradual dismantling of its psychiatric hospitals. Raymond Depardon photographed several asylums on the peninsula, focusing in particular on the final moments of the San Clemente asylum. It was in this hospital, on a small island in the Venetian lagoon, that he took photographs that convey the everyday horror of the place better than ten scholarly theses. Depardon shows us the immense distress of those being treated and the profound dismay of those around them.
The subject is deeply important to the TJ1 team and its artistic director Patrick Masset. The result is Manicomio : a show about the issue of confinement today, where our institutions seem once again to be prioritising control over well-being.
Created from encounters in places marked by constraint. In particular, Vivalia Psychiatric Hospital in Bertrix, Ephad Val de Meuse in Givet (France), the Fédasil Centre in Poelkapelle (West Flanders), Athanor in Dave... With its team of circus performers, Manicomio explores bodies and trajectories confronted with imposed rules, norms and spaces.
