Mw’Soul

FR Au cours des dernières années, avec des projets différents joués sur des scènes internationales, l’artiste tunisienne galvanise le public avec sa voix, la danse et sa présence impressionnante sur scène. Son dernier projet s’intitule « Mw’Soul », "connexion", il s’inspire des événements qui ont touché le monde arabe et qui ont poussé Ghalia Benali à créer et communiquer. Il représente aussi la collaboration avec le trompettiste Laurent Blondiau, ami de longue date.

« Mw’Soul » pourrait être le projet le plus soufi et spirituellement orienté de Benali jusqu’à présent. Le répertoire mêle ses propres textes à ceux de jeunes poètes arabes ; le tout est porté par le collectif de jazz Mâäk. Le souffle et le rythme sont renforcés par l’oud, les tambours et les percussions. Mw’Soul est enraciné dans l’âme, respire la vie et exhale l’énergie vitale.

NL De Tunesische artieste Ghalia Benali heeft eigenlijk geen introductie nodig. Met diverse projecten in de Europese en Arabische muziekscene, veroverde ze over heel de wereld al een stevige reeks podia. Haar stem, haar dans en indrukwekkende podiumprésence laten niemand onberoerd. Haar laatste project heet MwSOUL, of simpelweg “connectie”. Naar aanleiding van de Arabische Lente en al wat erna gebeurde, voelde Benali de drang om te creëren en te communiceren.

“Ik zong wat de mensen schreven. Ik woon in België, zij in Egypte, Tunesië, Palestina, Syrië en we communiceren voortdurend. “Al-Wassel”, de “connectie”, is het concept. In de klassieke Arabisch literatuur zeggen we : “Mawssouline”, “Al-Wassel”, “Wassel”, alles wat met connecties te maken heeft, verbonden zijn met iemand. Daar zeggen ze tegen elkaar : blijf verbonden, blijf “Mawssouline…” - Ghalia Benali, zangeres, actrice, kunstenares. MwSOUL is ongetwijfeld Benali’s meest Soufi en spiritueel georiënteerde project tot nu toe. Zij schrijft het repertoire en de arrangementen worden gemaakt door het jazzcollectief Mâäk. Sommige teksten komen van jonge Arabische poëten, andere schreef ze zelf. De ademhaling en het ritme zijn de twee sturende elementen in het hele project, zowel voor de stem als voor de blazers. De ritmesectie bestaat uit oud, drums en percussie. MwSOUL is geworteld in de ziel, ademt leven in en energie uit. Alles draait om de stille, maar altijd aanwezige connectie tussen twee creërende wezens, tussen verleden en toekomst, tussen leven en dood. Het eerste album van MwSOUL komt uit in de herfst van 2016 op het label ‘De Werf Records’

EN The Tunisian artist Ghalia Benali needs no further introduction in the European and Arab music scene throughout the world. In recent years and with different projects she performed on many international stages, galvanizing diverse audiences with her voice, dance and impressive stage presence. Her latest project is called MwSOUL, meaning "connection". Inspired by the Arab Spring, Benali felt the urge to create and communicate.

"I was singing what the people were writing. I’m living in Belgium, they’re living in Egypt, Tunisia, Palestine, Syria and, truly, we communicate. “Connection” is the concept. "Al-Wassel", therefore connection. In Classical Literary Arabic, we say : "Mawssouline", "Al-Wassel ", "Wassel ", it’s about being linked, connected to something. Over there, they are told : stay connected. Stay "Mawssouline…" - Ghalia Benali, singer, actress, artist.

MwSOUL might be Benali’s most Soufi and spiritually orientated project so far. The repertoire was written by her and arranged by jazz collective Mâäk. Some of the lyrics are written by young Arab poets, others by herself. The breath and the rhythm are the basic driving forces throughout the whole project, both for the voice as for the wind instruments. The pulse is naturally provided by oud, drums & percussions. MwSOUL is rooted in soul, breaths life and exhales energy. It is about the silent yet ever present connection between two creating beings, between past and future, between death and life.
MwSOUL will release a first album in Autumn 2016 on the label ‘De Werf Records’.
