Dans cette culture d’écrans et d’autres priorités Herbert Celis (Herb Cells) n’avait plus touché la véritable matière depuis 2015, c.-à-d. le papier aquarelle, la plume et l’encre (à part le café, qu’il a continué à boire sans cesse). Aujourd’hui il reprend donc cette pratique. Café et encre de chine sont ainsi manipulés sur papier au lieu de la peinture dans une technique similaire à l’aquarelle.
Dans cette neuvième série de caricatures caféinées « JazzPresso Ristretto », il visualise les impressions que le jazz provoque en lui. Souvent, l’espace semble trop étroit pour certaines transes démesurées et se dégage alors de l’illustration une tension claustrophobique.
La perspective à l’ordre du jour est celle de la place de la musicienne (jazz) toujours en minorité sous les spot lights. Herb y répond à sa manière sur papier lors de sa triple exposition au festival. Certain.e.s rappellent peut-être encore ses dessins lors de l’édition 2015.
Herb est originaire de Hasselt, dessine depuis ses 6 ans, est diplômé en réalisation de dessins animés, a fondé Naff label & management en 2012 et a tourné en tant que parolier/guest mc dans plusieurs groupes (Wild Boar & Bull bb, Frown-I-Brown, GLÜ, Estelle Goldfarb, Boris Viande, DJ Click, JayRay & ReeDoo, …). Son projet actuel de musique s’appelle @fokkop.era

Illustraties met koffie en Oost-Indische inkt
Onze cultuur van beeldschermen en andere prioriteiten, zorgde ervoor dat Herbert Celis (Herb Cells) sinds 2015 niet meer in aanraking kwam met de ware materie, namelijk aquarelpapier, pen en inkt (aan koffie bleef hij echter wel trouw). Vandaag neemt hij de traditie graag terug op. Zo vervangt hij verf door koffie en Oost-Indische inkt en werkt hij op papier met een techniek verwant aan die van het aquarelleren.
In deze negende reeks van cafeïnerijke karikaturen « JazzPresso Ristretto », geeft hij gestalte aan de indrukken die jazz bij hem opwekt. Vaak lijkt de ruimte te beperkt voor de soms grenzeloze extase, wat een claustrofobische spanning opwekt in de tekening.
Centraal staat de plaats van de (jazz)muzikante, nog steeds in de minderheid onder de spotlights. Tijdens zijn drievoudige tentoonstelling gaat hij op zijn eigen manier en op papier in op dit fenomeen. Zijn tekeningen van de editie 2015 liggen wellicht nog vers in het geheugen.
Herb is afkomstig uit Hasselt, tekent sinds zijn zesde, heeft een diploma animatiefilm op zak, en richtte in 2012 Naff label & management op. Hij toerde als tekstschrijver/mc guest met meerdere groepen. Zijn actueel muzikaal project draagt de naam @fokkop.era

Illustrations in coffee and Indian ink
In our culture of screens and other priorities, Herbert Celis (Herb Cells) had not set hands on actual illustration equipment, i.e. watercolour paper, pen and ink (except coffee, which he drinks endlessly) since 2015. He has now resumed this practice, using coffee and India ink on paper rather than paint in a technique similar to watercolour.
In “JazzPresso Ristretto”, this ninth series of caffeinated cartoons, he gives a visual form to his impressions of jazz. Often the space seems too confined for uncontained trance states and a claustrophobic tension is unleashed by the illustration. The perspective this time is focused on the place of the female (jazz) musician who is still in the minority under the spotlights. Herb responds to it in his way on paper in his triple exhibition at the festival. Some of you may recall the drawings he did at the festival in 2015.
Herb is originally from Hasselt, has been drawing since the age of 6, studied cartoon drawing, set up the Naff label & management in 2012 and has toured as a lyric writer/guest mc in several groups. His current music project is called @fokkop.era
